BMW Engine Problems

BMW vehicles with the N63 engine are showing performance problems.  There is a lengthy history of problems impacting various models.  Owners may be entitled to compensation for vehicle problems, repair costs, or other damages.  Here are some of these materials which include report complaints.

A  bulletin dealing with the engine problem  has been issued for the following vehicles: BMW 7 series sedans purchased from 3/09 to 6/12 BMW Hybrid 7 series purchased 4/10 to 6/12 BMW Gran Turismo purchased 9/09 to 2/12 BMW 5 series sedans purchased 3/19 to 7/13 BMW 6 series convertibles purchased 3/11 to 7/12 BMW 6 series coupe purchased 7/11 to 7/12 BMW x5 purchased from 3/10 TO 6/13 BMW x6 purchased from 7/08 to 6/14 BMW Active Hybrid x6 purchased 9/09 to 9/11

The Bulletin states that the following components may malfunction,  air mass sensors, high pressure fuel injectors, engine vacuum pumps, fuel system low pressure sensors, fresh air intake turbo seals, and crankcase ventilation hoses.  Here are some  problems reported to the NHTSA

SUMMARY:

WHILE IDLING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, A ROARING NOISE ALL OF A SUDDEN STARTED UNDERNEATH THE CAR. AS I STARTED MOVING, THE NOISE SEEMED TO FOLLOW THE ENGINE ACCELERATION AND GOT LOUDER. THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED GETTING HARDER TO MANIPULATE AND THE NOISE GOT LOUDER AT EACH STEER. I WAS IN A DIFFERENT STATE, ABOUT 40 MILES FROM MY HOUSE. BY THE TIME I GOT TO MY HOUSE, THE STEERING WHEEL WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO MANEUVER. I PARKED THE CAR TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER THE NEXT MORNING. THAT MORNING, WHEN I STARTED THE CAR FOR THE DEALER, THE NOISE WAS LIKE A CRACKING NOISE AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS STUCK. I CALLED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE TO TOW THE CAR TO THE BMW OF MANHATTAN DEALER. AMONG OTHER THINGS, THEY FOUND: POWER STEERING RESERVOIR EMPTY, CONNECTIONS ON PRESSURE RETURN LINES LEAKING, GASKETS SEALS LEAKING. AFTER THEY FIXED THE CAR, I STARTED HAVING STEERING ISSUES. THE STEERING WHEEL NOW HAS AN EXTREMELY WIDE PLAY, THE CAR IS ROCKING AT THE SLIGHTEST BUMP, PULLING LEFT OR RIGHT WHEN BRAKING. MOREOVER, WHEN ON A HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 55MPH, ANY ROUGH OR PATH HOLE WOULD THROW THE CAR ON A ZIG ZAG AND I I HAVE TO FIGHT WITH THE STEERING WHEEL TO KEEP THE CAR FROM VEERING ONTO OTHER CARS RUNNING BY. I RETURNED THE CAR 3 TIMES TO THE SAME DEALER, 10/07 AND 10/23 AND AFTER KEEPING THE CAR FOR DAYS, THEY SAY CANNOT REPLICATE MY COMPLAINT. IN THE MEANTIME, I SENT THEM COUNTLESS OF EXPLICATIVE EMAILS AND COPIED BMW CUSTOMER SERVICE TO NO AVAIL. I HAD TO GO TO OPEN ROAD BMW OF EDISON NJ ON 12/0314, 2/13/15 AND AT THE 3RD TIME ON 3/31/15 AND AT 34,500 MILES, THEY FOUND OUT THIS: EXCESSIVE PLAY INSIDE STEERING RACK, DROPPED SUBFRAME, BLED THE SYSTEM, REPLACED STEERING RACK. ON 4/3/- 4/5/15, I AM STILL HAVING SUDDEN PULLS ON BRAKING AND UNEVEN ROADS I LEARNED BMW RECALLED 2009- 2012 X5D SAV VEHICLES FOR STEERING WHEELS ISSUES. MY CAR IS JAN 2012. IT HAS NEVER BEEN RECALLED

2014 BMW X-1. ATTORNEY REPRESENTING CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO POWER ASSIST BRAKE FAILURE ACCIDENT. *SMD THE CONSUMER WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT, WHEN THE STOP/START SYSTEM ON HER VEHICLE AUTOMATICALLY SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. WHEN THE LIGHT CHANGED, THE CONSUMER REMOVED HER FOOT FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE VEHICLE ROLLED FORWARD A SHORT DISTANCE. HOWEVER, ANOTHER VEHICLE OF THE CONSUMER STOPPED. THE CONSUMER RELIED ON THE POWER ASSIST BRAKES, BUT THE ENGINE DID NOT PROMPTLY RESTART WHEN SHE APPLIED THE BRAKE MULTIPLE TIMES. THERE WERE A TOTAL OF 4 INCIDENCES. 2/21/15 TOOK BMW X3 XDRIVE28I TO DEALER WITH 112 MILES ON CAR, AFTER CAR ENGINE REVVED HIGHER AS I WAS COMING DOWN A HILL TO A COMPLETE STOP. I HAD TO PRACTICALLY STAND ON THE BREAK FOR CAR TO STOP. ACCELERATION LASTED ABOUT 4 SECONDS AFTER STOPPING. HAD TO KEEP MY FOOT ON BREAK DURING THAT TIME. IT HAPPENED A SECOND TIME ON THE WAY TO DEALER; GOING UP A SLIGHT HILL, WHILE COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. PRIOR TO THE ABOVE DATE, ON 2/16/15, CAR ALSO ACCELERATED BY ITSELF WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 55 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAD TO STEP ON BREAK TO SLOW DOWN. LATER THAT DAY THE CAR ACCELERATED BY ITSELF WHILE ROLLING IN A PARKING LOT. I HAD TO BREAK HARD TO STOP IT. ON 2/21/15 THE DEALER REQUESTED BMW NA TO SEND THEIR ENGINEERS TO CHECK OUT THE CAR. 2/24/15 BMW NA ADVISED ME THAT “THE CAR ONLY DOES WHAT YOU TELL IT TO DO WITH ONE OF THE CONTROLS.THE ENGINEERS WILL BE GOING TO THE DEALERSHIP TO CHECK IF ANYTHING IS WRONG WITH” MY 2015 X3 XDRIVE. I ADVISED THEM “THEY WERE LOOKING FOR THE WRONG THING SINCE THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH A CAR THAT ACCELERATES WHEN YOU ARE STEPPING ON THE BREAK.” THEY “SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY X3.” 3/4/15 BMW NA ADVISED THAT ENGINEERS HAD LOOKED AT THE CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP AND IT WILL TAKE 7 TO 10 BUSINESS DAYS FOR THEIR DECISION. 3/10/15 BMW NA ADVISE ME THAT THE ENGINEERS CHECKED OUT MY X3 AND THE CAR IS “PERFORMING AS DESIGNED”. I ASKED “IS THE X3 DESIGNED TO ACCELERATE WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO STOP THE CAR?” THE DEALER ALSO SAYS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. WHEN I TOLD DEALER “IF IT STARTS ACTING UP AGAIN I WILL BRING IT RIGHT BACK” DEALER SAID “THAT’S UP TO BMW”. SINCE MY BMW X3 SOMETIMES ACCELERATES WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO STOP AND WHILE AT ROAD SPEED, SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE CAR. EVERYTHING HAS TO GO THROUGH THE COMPUTER. MIGHT IT BE THE COMPUTER PROGRAM DESIGN?

I HAD A VERY FRIGHTENING TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION ON SATURDAY, MARCH 7 IN MY 2015 Z4 (THREE MONTHS OLD). I WAS HEADING DOWN A SLOPE INTO A PARKING LOT AND STOPPED TO PICK UP A TICKET AT THE KIOSK. THE CAR WAS IN DRIVE AND MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. ONCE I GOT THE TICKET, I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE AND THE CAR STARTED DRIVING BACKWARDS! I STOPPED IMMEDIATELY (LUCKILY THERE WAS NO ONE CLOSE BEHIND ME) AND TRIED AGAIN. SAME THING. SO, I PUT IT IN PARK, THEN BACK IN DRIVE AND IT DROVE NORMALLY. FINE. FROM THERE, I HAD TO GO TO THE STORE. WHEN I GOT THERE, I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE (AND THE KEY WAS IN MY PURSE) AND, OF COURSE, IT WENT AUTOMATICALLY INTO PARK, AS IT ALWAYS DOES WHEN IT TURNS OFF. SITTING IN MY PARKED CAR, I WENT TO GET SOME STUFF OUT OF MY PURSE AND WITH THE ENGINE TURNED COMPLETELY OFF, BEFORE MY VERY EYES THE GEAR SHIFTED FROM PARK TO REVERSE AND MY CAR STARTED MOVING BACKWARDS. I QUICKLY HIT THE BRAKE AND PUT ON THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. BMW ASSIST CAME OUT TO PICK UP THE CAR AND BRING IT IN FOR SERVICE. EVERYONE AGREES THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING, BUT IT IS 100% TRUE AND SCARED THE LIFE OUT OF ME. I’M AFRAID TO GO BACK IN MY CAR, NOW.

THE COMPLAINT IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. IT’S A QUALITY ISSUE. BMW’S N63 ENGINE IS EVIDENTLY NOT WELL ENGINEERED. THEY HAVE A “CUSTOMER CARE PACKAGE”€ IN PLACE FOR THOSE CUSTOMERS THAT COMPLAIN TO THE SERVICE DEPT ABOUT THEIR ENGINES NOT RUNNING RIGHT. BMW IS VERY CAREFUL TO MAKE SURE CUSTOMERS DO NOT VIEW THE REPAIR AS A RECALL. THAT SAID THE AMOUNT OF WORK REQUIRED IS EXTENSIVE (TAKES MORE THAN 1 WEEK TO COMPLETE). FROM WHAT I€™VE READ ONLINE THE FIX THEY HAVE IN PLACE DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK. I ASKED TO BE LET OUT OF MY LEASE AND PUT INTO A DIFFERENT VEHICLE WITH NO PENALTY AND WAS REFUSED ANY ACCOMMODATIONS. I€™M WRITING BECAUSE YOU SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS ENGINE ISSUE (GOOGLE N63 ISSUES) ENCOURAGE BMW TO RECALL THE CARS AND ALLOW THEIR CUSTOMERS TO SWAP OUT VEHICLES IF THEY CHOOSE TO DO SO.

THERE IS A MAJOR DESIGN FLAW ON THE BMW 435I 2014 TO PEOPLE WHO LIVE WHERE THERE IS RAIN. I WAS PULLING INTO THE PARKING LOT OF MY COMPANY AND THERE WAS A PUDDLE FROM THE RAN MAYBE 5-6″ (NOT ENOUGH TO PENETRATE THE DOORS AND WET THE INSIDE) . I DROVE THROUGH THE PUDDLE AND THE ENGINE HYDROLOCKED CAUSING THE ENGINE TO HAVE TO BE REPLACED. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT THE CAR IS LOW TO THE GROUND AND THAT THE AIR INTAKE IS ON THE FRONT GRILL AT THE BOTTOM. WITH THIS CAR BEING LOW, HOW CAN ANYONE DRIVE IN RAIN IN AN AREA WHERE WATER ACCUMULATES? I WAS NEVER WARNED OR INFORMED OF THIS SITUATION. I HAVE WORKED AT MY COMPANY FOR 16 YEARS AND HAVE HAD OVER 6 CARS AND HAVE NEVER HAD TO WORRY ABOUT ANY PUDDLE AT THE DRIVEWAY OF MY BUSINESS. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS

BMW SERVICE ADVISED OIL USAGE WAS NORMAL FOR VEHICLE AND REFUSED TO INVESTIGATE FURTHER. OIL CONSUMPTION HAS CONTINUED TO INCREASE TO AS MUCH AS 6 QUARTS IN LESS THAN 5,000 MILES. HAVING SERIOUS ENGINE MALFUNCTIONS WITH ENGINE SHUT DOWN, WITHOUT WARNING AND WITHOUT ABILITY TO COMPENSATE FOR TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. BELIEVE THERE IS AN INHERENT DEFECT IN THE ENGINE AND THAT CAR IS A DANGER. BMW SERVICE SIMPLY CHECKS FOR VISIBLE OIL LEAKS BUT REFUSES TO INVESTIGATE FURTHER.

BMW HAS A “CUSTOMER CARE PACKAGE” THAT IS A RECALL, ALTHOUGH THEY ARE NOT CALLING IT A RECALL. HOWEVER, ALL PARTS OF RECALL HAVE BEEN REPLACED ON VEHICLE AND NOW HAVING TO DRIVE A VEHICLE THAT HAS NOT BEEN FIXED, THAT I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE IN TRAFFIC AND DO NOT TRUST TO HAVE ENOUGH POWER TO MERGE ONTO INTERSTATE. BMW IS SIMPLY THROWING PARTS AT A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO HARM THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE.
