The first few gears are the worst
Chrysler’s attempt to provide fuel economy and smooth shifting on the 2014-5 Jeep Cherokee has been a problem, at least a work in progress. Hesitation, harsh shifting, sudden stoppage or malfunction have been among the problems reported. Software updates are designed to address the problem but many suggest replacement of the transmission is needed and even that may be ineffective. Here’s a few of the most common owner experiences:
- 1st Gear – Many owners have reported delay stepping on the gas or alternatively dangerous wheel spin.
- 3rd Gear – Once the ZF 9-speed finally decides to select 3rd gear, it may do this harshly creating a bang into 3rd gear.
Chrysler has tried service bulletins which are summarized below.
– TSB 375108
Chrysler issued a software patch to fix inconsistent or harsh shifting between 1-2 & 2-3. Some dealers then suggested the car needed to learn from the driver’s shifting habits.
– TSB 384499
A TSB was issued to fix the trouble-prone 5-4 downshift.
– TSB 379349 Summary
Another TSB is issued to inform dealers of another transmission software update that was intended to fix numerous issues, including a 3-2 downshift delay while driving on inclines, garage shifts (Park to Reverse or Drive), overall coastdown shift quality.
