Despite multiple attempts at repair, there continue to be multiple reports of transmission malfunction on the Jeep Cherokee.  One transmission repair site describes the problems as follows,

The Jeep Cherokee ZF 9-speed automatic was said to provide unprecedented levels of performance and fuel economy. Unfortunately, software and design issues make accelerating from a stop an exercise in randomness. Stepping on the gas pedal could trigger sluggish response, wheel spin, or a sudden surge of power. The software updates can often cure the problem. However, it may cause the ZF 9-speed to skip 2nd gear entirely, going from 1st to 3rd. Here’s a few of the most common owner experiences:

  • 1st Gear – Many owners have reported a pronounced delay from the time that they step on the gas, until the truck starts to move. These same people also say that stepping on the gas could result in unexpected wheel spin.
  • 2nd Gear – The most common complaint about this gear is that the transmission will hang in 2nd, and not up shift for an extended period of time.
  • 3rd Gear – Once the ZF 9-speed finally decides to select 3rd gear, it does so very harshly. Creating a sort of ‘bang’ into 3rd gear.

SUMMARY:

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokee and 2015 Chrysler 200, Jeep Renegade, RAM ProMaster, and 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles equipped with 9-speed automatic transmissions. CONSEQUENCE:

If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there is an increased risk of a crash.

SUMMARY:
CAR BEGAN TO LOOSE POWER AND STARTED BUCKING WAS TRAVELING AT 70 MPH…THEN IT STARTED THRASHING NUMEROUS CODES AND ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH STARTED FLASHING THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A BIG DOWNSHIFT AND THEN A BANG TOTAL LOSS OF POWER ON A MAJOR FREEWAY. WHEN THE CAR CAME TO A STOP IT WOULD NOT DISENGAGE FROM DRIVE THEN AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF I WAS ABLE TO PUT IT IN PARK. AFTER RESTARTING IT ALL THE STRONG MESSAGE LIGHTS WERE ON AS WELL AS DIFFERENT COMPUTER MESSAGES LIKE CHECK BRAKE, CHECK ENGINE. IF YOU PUT IT IN GEAR IT WOULD MAKE A BIG CLUCK BUT NO POWER WOULD ONLY IDLE. WHEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED THE AT CAR LOOSES POWER AND STARTS TO BUCK AND DOWNSHIFT TO A LOWER GEAR THEN TRANSMISSION DISENGAGES. ENGINE STAY RUNNING BUT THERE IS NO POWER AND NOTHING HAPPENS WHEN YOU DEPRESS GAS PEDAL. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AS IT HAPPENS CONSISTENTLY. ALSO THE TRANSMISSION MANY TIME KEEPS RANDOMLY SWITCHING BETWEEN GEARS. DEALER AGAIN SAYS ITS A SOFTWARE ISSUE IN THE TRANSMISSION. SOFTWARE RECODES HAVE NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM.

MY VEHICLE STOPPED ACCELERATING FORCING ME TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE SERVICE TRANSMISSION LIGHT FLASHED ON AND I TURNED MY VEHICLE OFF. WHEN I STARTED IT BACK UP IT ALLOWED ME TO DRIVE BUT THE “D” SYMBOL FLASHED AND IT STILL STATED THAT THE SERVICE TRANSMISSION WAS IN USE. WHEN I STOPPED AT RED LIGHTS THE MESSAGE “SHIFT INTO PARK AND THEN INTO DESIRED GEAR” APPEARED. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THIS OCCURRED, THE FIRST TIME HAPPENING AT THE END OF 2014. I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE DEALERSHIP I BOUGHT IT FROM AND THEY FIXED IT, I WILL BE DOING THIS AGAIN THIS WEEK. THE DEALERSHIP WAS AL DEEBY IN CLARKSTON, MI.

NHTSA ID Number: 10690464
Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
Vehicle Identification No. (VIN): 1C4PJMBS8EW…

SUMMARY:
AS I PRESS ON THE GAS TO ACCELERATE TO PASS OR GO THROUGH AN INTERSECTION THE CAR DOES NOT RESPOND FOR A VERY DELAYED PERIOD OF TIME, WHEN IT DOES RESPOND IT IS WHEN YOU HAVE MAD THE DECISION IT IS TOO LATE TO EXECUTE THE PASS OR CROSS THE INTERSECTION BUT THEN THE CAR WILL RESPOND AND I HAVE TO HIT THE BREAKS. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THE DELAY IS NORMAL, OR THEY HAVE REPROGRAMMED MY TRANSMISSION STATING THAT MAY “FIX” THE PROBLEM. IT DOES NOT, IT JUST MAKES THE SHIFTING JERKY AND THE DELAY STAYS THE SAME. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND JEEP/ CHRYSLER WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THERE IS A PROBLEM EITHER IN THEIR TRANSMISSION OR IN THE PROGRAMMING, BUT IT IS GOING TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT OR MULTIPLE ACCIDENT AS IT IS NOT ISOLATED TO ONE VEHICLE.
