Owners of the Nissan Altima have complained about transmission problems. The variable automatic transmission may malfunction with problems including hard shifting, stuttering between gears, hesitation and sputtering, vibration, or failure. No recall to address this has been issued though Nissan has been aware of the problem. Vehicles with problems include,

A service bulletin attempted to address the problem. Corrective action: Dealers will either replace the transmission or the valve body inside it. If a new valve body is installed, a new oil pan with an additional magnet will also be installed to collect excess metal fragments that develop over time as a result of normal transmission operation.
