9 Speed Transmission Recall

businessman signing a contract

There have been multiple recalls, service bulletins, and  changes in the 9 speed transmission to address serious problems.

Jeep and Land Rover showed the first nine-speed  automatic transmissions of the world  at the 2013 Nobel Geneva Motor Show  with the  Jeep Cherokee 2014 the first nine-speed automatic transmission commercially available.

1. Recall

Automotive supplier ZF is recalling a control sensor found on nine-speed automatic transmissions used in over 500,000 vehicles. Fiat Chrysler, Honda and Land Rover models are affected.   The transmission can shift into neutral at any speed or gear because of an insufficient crimp on a wiring harness attached to the sensor cluster. Models affected include the 2014-16 Jeep Cherokee, 2015-16 Jeep Renegade, 2015-17 Chrysler 200, 2015-16 RAM ProMaster City, 2016 Fiat 500X, 2014-17 Range Rover Evoque, 2015-17 Land Rover Discovery, 2015-17 Acura TLX (V6) and certain trims of the 2015-16 Honda Pilot.

2. Software Changes and Updates

A Feb. 2015 story explains.

Now the automaker is offering a solution by way of software updates. The reprogramming of vehicle computers is said to cure issues of “hard shifts, lunging, unexpected disengagement of the transmission, and repeated illumination of malfunction lights.” Those complaints come directly from customers filing reports on the safecar.gov website.

FCA U.S. will begin to notify owners of 2014 and 2015 Jeep Cherokees along with owners of some 2015 Chrysler 200s powered by the 2.4-liter four-cylinder that the reprogrammed software is available at dealerships. In an interview with Automotive News, an FCA U.S. spokeswoman said the updated transmission software is “intended to keep the vehicle performing as intended, and to prevent durability issues from occurring in the future.”

This is hardly the first issue  had with the nine-speed unit. The Cherokee’s original launch was delayed three months. http://www.topspeed.com/trucks/truck-news/jeep-cherokee-gets-software-update-for-problems-with-the-nine-speed-automatic-transmission-ar167506.html

“Law360, New York (March 19, 2015, 1:26 PM ET) — A New Jersey federal judge on Wednesday pared claims in a putative class action alleging Jaguar Land Rover Automotive PLC manufactured and sold Range Rover vehicles equipped with defective electronic air suspension systems, refusing to toss the common-law claims but cutting consumer protection claims as time-barred.
U.S. District Judge William H. Walls partially granted the automaker’s bid to dismiss a second amended complaint in the suit alleging model years 2003 to 2006 of the Range Rover have a suspension defect that causes the suspension system’s rubber air bellows to develop leaks, subsequently releasing air pressure and losing their ability to hold the vehicle’s weight.

The case is Majdipour et al. v. Jaguar Land Rover North America LLC, case number 2:12-cv-07849, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

2010 Range Rover Sport drive train and electrical problems

I have a 2010 RRS S/C purchased in January. It’s an incredible vehicle, but has been unreliable for me. It’s currently at the dealership for the 2nd time in as many months undergong diagnosis and transmission review for what appears to be bizarre electrical problems. The first time this happened, every warning light on the dash came on followed by multiple error messages. I lost power steering and virtually all engine power. The vehicle was towed to the dealership on a flatbed, and a few days later I got it back with a “no fault found” diagnosis. The problem did not rear its head while at the dealership so the fault codes stored in the ECU were reviewed then cleared.

A week ago last Monday a similar problem occurred (all dash lights and multiple error messages), but this time the transmission wouldn’t shift out of low gear. The dealer has had it now for over a week and they are “still working on it”. The ECU’s session files have been forwarded to LRNA but since this is the first time this problem has been seen, there is no knowledge of the cause nor is there a fix. The FSE-Field Service Engineer has recommended the vehicle’s wiring be checked and to have the transmission pan pulled, and although they did find a high-resistance ground point and fixed it today, I have very low confidence that this is the root of the problem.

Although the RRS is a fantastic vehicle when it works, my confidence in it has eroded, and I’m really not sure I’d buy another one. Fortunately for the rest of you, this does not seem to be a common problem. I am currently reviewing the Lemon Laws for my state.

I saw a Santorini Black 2010 RRS S/C on the road today and drooled… until I remembered that I actually own one.
