- Problems A number of transmission problems have been reported, including bucking,
harsh engage, sudden acceleration, delay in downshifts, delayed acceleration, difficulty, repeated repair or replacement of the transmission and its components
A class action against General Motors states, “shuddering, shaking, jerking and hesitation is related to internal issues within the transmission and/or torque converter causing undue friction and impairing proper functioning
of hydraulic systems and gears, which in turn results in metal shavings being circulated throughout the transmission. This damage to the transmission and torque converter imposes escalating repairs upon consumers, including the need to flush the metal shavings from the transmission. Because of
the Transmission Defect, the Class Vehicles present a safety hazard and are unreasonably dangerous to consumers. ” Shelton v. General Motors, Case 2:19-cv-11802-S

1. Class Action and CUE System
There have been a number of complaints about the Cadillac Touch Tone Display. A class action states,
GM has concealed a dangerous defect from its customers
who purchased or leased 2013 to 2017 Cadillac ATS, SRX and XTS vehicles and
2014 to 2017 Cadillac CTS, ELR and Escalade vehicles equipped with GM’s
“Cadillac User Experience” touch screen display (the “CUE System” or “CUE”)
(collectively, “Class Vehicles”). Among other things, the CUE System controls
the vehicle’s climate, navigation, audio/Bluetooth/communications, and back-up
camera. GM’s conduct is especially egregious because the defective CUE
Systems pose serious safety risks.

General Motors May Face Class-Action Lawsuit Over Defective 8-Speed Transmissions
Models affected include the Chevrolet Silverado and Colorado, as well as the GMC Sierra and Canyon
The filed class-action lawsuit affects the Chevrolet Silverado as well as the GMC Sierra. Plaintiffs in the lawsuit allege General Motors’ 8-speed transmissions are defective.
Certain Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC models built between 2015 and 2019 may have a defect in their 8-speed transmissions, according to a class-action lawsuit posted to ClassAction.org. GM Authority spotted the lawsuit, which says there are serious problems with GM’s Hydra-Matic 8L90 and 8L45 transmissions.
More specifically, the transmissions have a defect that cause vehicles to hesitate and jerk when accelerating or coming to a stop. The lawsuit reads, “These transmissions have a common defect…Drivers have reported that the shift is sometimes so violent, they feel as though they have been hit by another vehicle.”
It also mentions the case of an owner whose vehicle shifted from reverse to drive harshly enough that it nearly lurched through his garage door. The defect centers around the transmission itself or the torque converter. Over time, any shuddering, jerking or hestitation may cause internal issues, including metal shavings being circulated throughout the transmission.

What Vehicles are Covered
Problems have been reported on GM trucks and SUVs, namely the Cadillac Escalade (model years 2015-2017), the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (model years 2014-2016), the Chevrolet Suburban (model years 2015-2017), the Chevrolet Tahoe (model years 2015-2017), the GMC Sierra 1500 (model years 2014-2016) and the GMC Yukon (model years 2015-2017).
What types of Problems Have been Reported
According to the class action, because of the high number of failures, AC System replacement parts are on national backorder and the wait for replacement parts is long – often many months. Components may crack and leak refrigerant; lose pressure within the AC System; and fail to properly function to provide cooled air into the Vehicle’s passenger cabin. The Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoes all have significant problems with the air conditioning system that may break down during normal vehicle operation, with charges for repair due to factory defect.
Chevrolet Malibu owners have experienced significant engine problems. 2016 and 2017 Chevy Malibu owners have experienced engine problem. One issues is that the the Malibu will go into Reduced Engine Power mode. Here is one typical complaint,
“The first time the car had less than 1k miles on it!! It feels like a transmission problem. I am familiar with the system where the car will turn itself off while at a stoplight and then back on again- I’m fine with that system. What is not okay is when driving in DC rush hour traffic, accelerating, braking, or slowing down and the car will violently jerk. The first time it felt as if I was rear-ended.” 2016 Chevrolet Malibu – Consumer Review, Edmunds.
Owners of these defective vehicles may be entitled to compensation for loss of use, diminished value, or other claims. We offer a free consultation as part of our continuing investigation into defects in these cars. Please call the Law Office of Howard Gutman, 973-598-1980.

General Motors has recalled almost 700,000 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500s and 2014 GMC Sierra 1500s for a steering defect following a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation (NHTSA # 17V414000). The steering defect can cause a potentially dangerous problem driving and turning.
These trucks’ power steering assist (“EPS”) can cut out, especially during low speed turns, and then return suddenly. This may result in a loss of control of the vehicle. Additional symptoms of the problem may include other electrical systems cutting out and warning light indicators going off.
According to GM the underlying problem is a defect in the EPS module software, which needs to be reprogrammed.

Condensor, fluid, and the overall system have been identified as the source of problems.
As the class action explains, “The first defective component is the line leading from the compressor to the condenser. This line consists primarily of an aluminum tube connected to a rubber hose. On information and belief, this line can fail in two ways. First, the aluminum tube can become disconnected from the rubber hose, creating an opening in the line that can allow refrigerant to escape. Second, the aluminum tube itself has a material defect that can allow the tube to rupture, also allowing refrigerant to escape. GM has recognized this defect. It no longer manufactures the compressor to condenser line that was original equipment in the Class Vehicles.
General Motors instructed mechanics that if they find a failure in this line, they are to replace it with a newly designed line and install a bracket in the system to minimize flexion and movement of the compressor to condenser line. (Exhibit A). Unfortunately, customers who suffer this failure after the vehicle is out of warranty are required to purchase and pay for the installation of these new parts, thus having to pay twice to obtain a functioning air conditioning system.
