1. VW 8 Speed Transmission Problem 

Consumers have complained about a number of problems with the Volkswagen Tiguan  AWF8F35 8-Speed Automatic Transmission.

2. Class Action 

A class action has been filed to address the problem and notes one goal was to improve gas economy,

“The Transmission was designed to improve the Class Vehicles’
miles-per-gallon ratings in reaction to consumer demand and mounting pressure
from regulators to continually improve fuel economy. Unfortunately, the fuel
economy came at a price. Under pressure to squeeze
more miles per gallon out of the Class Vehicles, VWGoA calibrated the
Transmission’s software to engage higher gears at insufficient speeds and
insufficient revolutions per minute (“RPMs”) and likewise programmed the
torque converter to lock up at insufficient speeds and at insufficient RPMs. Parrish v. Volkswagen,  8:19-cv-01148.

However, significant problems arose,

the Transmission  grinds, suffers hard and sudden shifts, delayed acceleration,
hesitation, banging into gear, and ultimately suffers broken seals and oil leaks,
resulting in catastrophic failure (the “Transmission Defect.”)

3. Typical Problems  

“There is a growl noise heard when driving less than 25 MPH, around 200 RPMS in 4th gear upshifting to 5th gear.

Venue for the Volkswagen diesel emissions class action has been discussed in several publications.  The Center for Class Action Fairness, has argued  that the Volkswagen cases—all consumer class actions—should be coordinated before a single judge who could ensure fairness to all class members. That filing follows more than 300 class actions brought against Volkswagen in the United States.  Consumers allege they were duped into paying premium prices for “clean diesel” cars that the EPA has said emit as much as 40 times the standard for nitrogen oxides.

“The scandal erupted last month, when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notified Volkswagen that some of its diesel cars made since 2009 had a “defeat device” in them designed to cheat emissions tests in violation of the Clean Air Act. The devices are believed to be in 482,000 cars in the United States. Volkswagen Diesel Emissions Lawsuit

            

Volkswagen manufactured diesel vehicles it knew would not pass emission standards and installed a defeat device,   Volkswagen ran television commercials for the past several years touting its “clean diesel” vehicles. Volkswagen Routan Brake Problems

A class action was filed charging defects in the Volkswagen Routan brakes.  Volkswagen has  now filed to try to dismiss the claim.  The claim includes allegations of shuddering and brake caliper problems.  The proposed class includes customers who purchased Routan vans from 2009-12.

At the end of the Lease, the inspector charged me for damages that do not exist. I called VW, I talked to a supervisor. I explained to her that the inspector (who was rude) charged me for a “previous repair” without any visible damage, charged me for a dent in the door (there was no dent) and charged me for a dent BELOW the car (need to lay in the floor to see it). She said the only way they will take off those charges was with an invoice from a body shop that states that were repaired. I requested her to do another inspection and she said no, they don’t do more inspections, so because I insisted her then at the end she accepted to credit me $200 on the final bill. I went to a body shop, I explained to him what was going on and he was in shock. He told me there was nothing he could do because there was nothing to repair, I should hire an attorney. The day of the car return I explained to the person that received the car all this. He start looking at the car and he didn’t understand why I was being charged. I got the final bill a month later and I have been charged in full without any credit. We purchased a 2012 VW CC in May of 2012. The car was used and had approx. 18,000 miles at time of purchase, currently the car has 72,000. We had routine oil changes done (more than required by VW) and service to our vehicle. In 2014 at 51,000 miles our 2012 VW CC needed a new engine. We took it to a VW dealer and had the engine replaced. At the time of engine replacement, it was RECOMMENDED not included in our engine replacement that a transmission oil change may be needed. This information was not pressing in its delivery as other additional services were provided and included at time of engine replacement this was not. At the time of engine replacement the mileage was 12,000 miles over the recommended oil transmission change which was at 40,000 miles. Our car is currently at a VW dealer who is stating negligence on our part after ONE missed oil transmission change. We were quoted $5,500 to replace transmission on a car that will be three years old to us May 27, 2015. What options exist? Smells like a lemon.

I AGREED. 8/17/11 I SPOKE WITH SERVICE MANAGER, UPON ARRIVAL. SVC ADVISED THAT THE CAR WAS DRIVEN AGAIN FOR 20 OR SO MILES AND AGAIN NO ISSUES WERE FOUND. SHE AGAIN STATED IT WAS “JUST PROBABLY BAD GAS”. I HAVE A 2009 VW CC THAT NORMALLY IDLES AT 600 RPM BUT DUE TO EITHER ENGINEERING OR A MALFUNCTION IT INCREASES IT’S IDLE TO 950 RPM FOR EITHER AN ELECTRICAL OR COOLING ISSUE DEPENDING ON THE VW TECHNICIAN YOU TALK TO. THIS CREATES A SITUATION WHERE THE VEHICLE WANTS TO LUNGE OR SURGE FORWARD REQUIRING EXCESSIVE PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE TO HOLD STILL. THIS IS A 58% INCREASE IN RPM WITH A VERY LOW STALL TORQUE CONVERTER. THE CAR IS VERY HARD TO DRIVE IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC AS IT IS SURGING FORWARD AND STRESS ON THE DRIVE TRAIN AT THAT RPM. I HAVE TAKEN TO VW DEALERSHIP, THE TECH AGREES THAT IT IS NOT NORMAL BUT VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA STATES IT IS OPERATING AS ENGINEERED. IF SO, THIS IS AN UNSAFE CONDITION TO REQUIRE A 58% INCREASE IN RPM FOR BETTER COOLING AT TEMPERATURES OF OVER 93 DEGREES. IN ANY CASE, MINE DOES THIS IN THE WINTER AS WELL AS COOLER SUMMER DAYS AND NOT JUST HOT DAYS. IN FACT, SOME HOT DAYS IT DOES NOT DO IT AT ALL. SO EITHER IT IS DESIGNED TO INCREASE RPM ABOVE 93 DEGREES OR IT ISN’T. REGARDLESS MINE DOESN’T OPERATE CORRECTLY IN EITHER CASE. *TR

THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE DEALER ALSO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE DID NOT DISPLAY AN ERROR CODE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 9000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 13000.

Volkswagen Jetta TDI Fuel Pump and Stalling Problems

Owners of Volkswagen Jetta vehicles of various model years have been experiencing stalls, check engine light coming on at highway speeds, sudden stops.  Some of the problems have been traced to failures and defects in the fuel pump.  Even after multiple attempts by dealers to fix the problem, Jetta owners still experience potentially dangerous stalls and other issues.cropped-woman-with-auto.jpg

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated several investigations into the fuel pumps in 2009-2015 vehicles.  Many consumers have experienced the results of fuel pump failures, and some reports are as follows:

WHILE DRIVING, OUR 2009 VW JETTA TDI STALLED AND STOPPED IN AN INTERSECTION. WHEN RESTARTED THE GLOW-PLUG LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON WHILE THE CAR LIMPED TO A STOP ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WE HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE LOCAL VW DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP HAD FAILED AND THE TOTAL FUEL SYSTEM WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED DO TO CONTAMINATION. I WAS SURPRISED WHEN THE EST’D COST OF $7,500 TO REPAIR MY CAR WAS PRESENTED TO US WITH NO OFFER OF HELP BY VW. I WAS EVEN MORE SURPRISED WHEN THE SERVICE WRITER SAID THAT PART HAS BEEN REDESIGNED A NUMBER OF TIMES TO HELP DEAL WITH THIS ISSUE. *TR

THE CAR IS A 2009 VW JETTA TDI CLEAN DIESEL. WHILE ON THE NEW YORK STATE THRUWAY AT 55 MPH, SUDDENLY THE CAR’S WARNING CHIME SOUNDED, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, THE GLOW PLUG WARNING LIGHT FLASHED AND THE CAR IMMEDIATELY LOST POWER, AND I COASTED TO A STOP ON THE SHOULDER. IT WAS TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALER, WHO REPLACED THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM AT VW’S COST. THEY SAID IT WAS THE HPFP (HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP) THAT DISINTEGRATED AND DESTROYED THE FUEL SYSTEM, FROM THE FUEL TANK FORWARD. *TR

VEHICLE ABRUPTLY LOST POWER, NO CONTROL OVER ACCELERATION, HAD TO PULL OFF OF INTERSTATE TO SHOULDER OF ROAD. CAR RESTARTED FINE. TAKING TO VW DEALER FOR EVALUATION. *TR

AS MY WIFE WAS DRIVING TOWARDS A STOP SIGN AT A RELATIVELY SLOW SPEED, THE VEHICLE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN THE CAR DIED. AS SHE STARTED TO ROLL BACKWARDS, SHE STOPPED THE CAR AND WAITED FOR THE OTHER TRAFFIC TO CLEAR. SHE WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AND DRIVE IT HOME AS SHE WAS LESS THAN A MILE AWAY. AFTER I RETURNED HOME, I STARTED THE CAR AND NOTICED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. AT THAT POINT THE CAR SEEMED FINE. I WENT TO AUTOZONE TO SEE IF THEY COULD DOWNLOAD THE ERROR CODES THAT MIGHT PROVIDE SOME INSIGHT INTO WHAT COMPONENT WAS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. THEY COULD NOT DO THAT ACCORDING TO CA LAW. I PURCHASED A OBDII CODE READER AND DISCOVERED CODE P0191 AND P0087, BOTH RELATING TO THE FUEL SYSTEM. P0191 INDICATED THE FUEL RAIL PRESSURE SENSOR A CIRCUIT RANGE / PERFORMANCE. THE P0087 INDICATED THE FUEL RAIL / SYSTEM PRESSURE TOO LOW. WHILE RESEARCHING THESE CODES ON THE INTERNET I DISCOVERED A HUGE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION RELATING TO THIS ISSUE. I AM THANKFUL MY WIFE WAS NOT IN A HUGE AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC AS SHE COULD HAVE BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AS A RESULT OF THE CAR SHUTTING DOWN WITHOUT WARNING. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON WITH THE TDI DIESEL ENGINE SINCE 2009. *TR

I HAD HEARD ON THE RADIO ON CAR TALK THAT TDI WERE SHUTTING DOWN ON THE HIGHWAYS AND THAT IT WAS BEING LOOKED INTO BY THE NHTSA. I ALSO READ DOZENS OF OTHER STORIES ONLINE WITH RELATED ISSUES WHICH IN THE END COST THEM A FEW THOUSAND TO TEN THOUSAND TO FIX ON RELATIVELY NEW CAR. I HAVE READ IT IS DUE TO HPFP NEEDING TO BE REPLACED WHICH WAS DAMAGED WHEN FUELED UP WITH INCORRECT FUEL. BASICALLY VW IS SAYING THAT METAL PATICULATES ARE IN THE FULE FILTERS AND SYSTEM DUE TO PUTTING GAS INSTEAD OF DIESEL. THEY ARE TELLING THIS SUPPOSED CATCH ALL TO EVERYONE WITH THIS ISSUE. I HAVE NEVER PUT ANYTHING OTHER THAN DIESEL INTO MY CAR. THE WARRENTY IS ONLY GOOD UP TO 50K. I AM AT 54K. THIS IS AN ON GOING ISSUE FOR JETTA TDI OWNERS AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE AN ISSUE WHEN THE MILEAGE CLIMBS. WHILE DRIVING 2009 JETTA TDI WITH APPROXIMATELY 42K MILES, GLOW PLUG LIGHTS FLASHED AND THEN RESULTED IN ENGINE FAILURE AND ALL POWER LOSS WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70MPH ON HIGHWAY. VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO LOCAL CAR SERVICE. AT FIRST WE WERE TOLD THERE MAY HAVE BEEN CONTAMINATED FUEL THAT CAUSED THIS PROBLEM. ONCE A MECHANIC LOOKED AT IT WE WERE TOLD THERE WERE SHARDS OF METAL THROUGH THE FUEL LINES AND IN THE ENGINE, RESULTING IN REPAIRS UPWARD OF $10,000.00. FURTHERMORE I HAVE THE LAST 25 REPRINTED RECEIPT SHOWING DIESEL WAS THE FUEL PUT IN THIS VEHICLE, FROM A REPUTABLE FUEL PROVIDED. I FEEL THIS MUST BE ADDRESS SOON OR THERE IS GOING TO BE A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I BELIEVE THAT THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A POTENTIAL ACCIDENT AND WE COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY HURT IF NOT FOR THE ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON AND US SEEING IT SOON ENOUGH TO GET IT STOP AND UNDER CONTROL. I IMPLORE YOU TO PLEASE CHECK THIS CLOSELY. I SEE I AM NOT THE ONLY COMPLAINT ON THIS ISSUE AND I BELIEVE AS THESE CARS GET 40K TO 50K MILES ON THEM WE WILL SEE MUCH MORE FAILURES. I WAS DRIVING A 2009 VW JETTA TDI. I WAS TRAVELING AT A HIGHWAY SPEED (AROUND 65PMH) WHEN SUDDENLY THE ENGINE STOPPED. I ALMOST GOT HIT WHILE TRYING TO SECURE THE VEHICLE TO A SAFE LOCATION. THIS PROBLEM IS VERY UNSAFE. THE ENGINE MALFUNCTION LIGHT CAME ON. THE CAR WOULD NO LONGER TURN ON. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS SENDING METAL SHARDS THROUGH THE FUEL SYSTEM. THE TOTAL COST IS BETWEEN 6-10K AND THE CAR ONLY HAS 42,000 MILES.

Details: I AM THE OWNER OF A 2006 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI 5-SPEED WITH 39,000 MILES. MY VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED IN MEXICO IN JANUARY OF 2006, AND I PURCHASED IT IN JUNE OF 2006. THIS WEEK, THE CLUTCH STARTED SLIPPING AND IT WARRANTED A VISIT TO THE LOCAL VW DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT INFORMED ME THAT MANY 2006 VW JETTA TDI 5-SPD VEHICLES WERE MADE WITH A DEFECTIVE CLUTCH PLATE, BUT THEY WOULD HAVE TO REMOVE MY TRANSMISSION TO DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT MY VEHICLE HAD THE DEFECTIVE PART. THEY INFORMED ME THAT IF MY VEHICLE DID NOT HAVE THE DEFECTIVE PART, THEY WOULD CHARGE ME NEARLY $500 IN LABOR FEES FOR REMOVING THE TRANSMISSION FOR INSPECTION. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE MY VEHICLE INSPECTED TO DETERMINE WHETHER IT HAS THE DEFECTIVE PART, NOR SHOULD I HAVE TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE WHEN THIS CLUTCH HAS BEEN FAILING PREMATURELY. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, I FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS CLUTCH PLATE ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE. I ALSO FOUND 88 PAGES ON ONE FORUM ALONE (HTTP://FORUMS.TDICLUB.COM/SHOWTHREAD.PHP?T=137014) ABOUT THIS PART AND THE CLUTCH/FLYWHEEL ASSEMBLY FAILING PREMATURELY. MANY OF THESE PEOPLE WERE FORCED TO PAY FOR A NEW CLUTCH AT A COST OF OVER $2000.00. SOME WERE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. THIS CLUTCH PLATE AND THE CORRESPONDING ASSEMBLY HAS BEEN RECALLED BECAUSE OF SAFETY CONCERNS IN MANY COUNTRIES EXCEPT FOR THE UNITED STATES. I FEAR HAVING MY CLUTCH FAIL WHEN I NEED THE ENGINE TO BE ENGAGED. IF I WERE TO HAVE A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER, IT COULD EASILY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AND ENDANGER MYSELF AND THE OCCUPANTS OF MY VEHICLE. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT CAN BE DONE TO BRING THIS PROBLEM TO THE SURFACE, AND PROMPT AN INVESTIGATION BY THE NHTSA TO LOOK INTO THIS KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE? Details: I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2006 VW TDI USED, WITH 33K MILES. AFTER ONE DAY OF OWNERSHIP THE CLUTCH PEDAL WENT THE FLOOR. I PULLED THE PEDAL UP WITH MY TOE, AND GOT IT TO ENGAGE ONE MORE TIME, THEN BACK TO THE FLOOR. AFTER THAT, THE CAR WOULDN’T PULL ITSELF IN ANY GEAR. THE CAR NEVER SLIPPED, VIBRATED, ETC., NO SYMPTOMS OF A WORE CLUTCH, JUST INSTANT FAILURE. I CALLED VW ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE, AND VW TOWED IT TO A DEALER 3HOURS AWAY. BEFORE THE DEALER TORE INTO IT THEY CALLED ME AND SAID THAT IF IT IS DUE TO CLUTCH WEAR/ABUSE THAT IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED. AFTER SOME RESEARCH HERE ON TDICLUB, I FOUND THAT DMF, AND CLUTCH FAILURES WERE VERY COMMON AND GENERALLY WARRANTED. I TOLD THE DEALER TO GO AHEAD AND TEAR INTO THE CAR TO FIND OUT MORE. TODAY I GET A CALL AND THEY TELL ME THAT THE CLUTCH IS WORE OUT, AND THAT IT IS NOT COVERED. THE ADVISOR ON THE PHONE SAID THAT HALF THE CLUTCH ON ONE SIDE IS ALMOST COMPLETELY GONE, AND THE OTHER SIDE IS COMPLETELY GONE. AND IF I COME PICK IT NOW, I WILL ONLY BE OUT $550, OR I CAN HAVE THEM DO THE REPAIR FOR $1800. I TOLD HIM TO NOT DO ANYTHING YET, AND THAT I WOULD CALL HIM BACK TOMORROW WITH AN ANSWER. Details: NO SYMPTOMS PRIOR TO FAILURE. WHILE EXITING FREEWAY, CLUTCH STOPPED OPERATING BETWEEN GEARS, WHILE DOWNSHIFTING. COULD NOT GET CAR BACK INTO GEAR AND HAD TO STOP IN MIDDLE OF MULTI LANE OFFRAMP, POINTING SLIGHTLY UPHILL. CLUTCH PEDAL WOULD COME ONLY HALF WAY UP. CLUTCH COULD NOT BE ENGAGED ENOUGH TO START ENGINE. AAA WAS CALLED AND ARRIVED AFTER 20 MINUTES, DURING WHICH TIME CAR REMAINED IN OFFRAMP. CAR WAS TOWED TO DEALER AND LEFT OVER LONG NEW YEAR’S WEEKEND. DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT INFORMED ME, ONCE THEY LOOKED AT IT, THAT THE CLUTCH HAD FAILED AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR IT AS IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. I AGREED TO THE SERVICE SINCE THIS IS MY ONLY VEHICLE. I WAS CHARGED $1,863. FOR THE SERVICE, WHICH INCLUDED REPLACEMENT OF THE FLYWHEEL. I COMPLAINED THAT THE FLYWHEEL WAS PART OF THE ENGINE, AND SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. I WAS DIRECTED TO CALL VOLKSWAGEN AND SUBMIT A COMPLAINT. I ASKED TO RETAIN THE PARTS SO THAT I COULD SEE WHAT HAD GONE WRONG. THE NEXT DAY, BEFORE CALLING VOLKSWAGEN, I DISCOVERED FROM AN INDEPENDENT SOURCE THAT VOLKSWAGEN HAS HAD A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN OUT ON THE CLUTCH SINCE NOVEMBER 2007. Details: I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2006 JETTA TDI (STANDARD SHIFT); AT THE TIME OF THIS INCIDENT THE VEHICLE HAD APPROX. 17,000 MILES ON IT. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND UPON DOWNSHIFTING THE CLUTCH FAILED AND THE VEHICLE WAS STUCK IN GEAR; I WAS UNABLE TO TAKE THE CAR OUT OF GEAR OR CHANGE SPEED. THIS INCIDENT LED ME TO HAVE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY WHILE BEING UNABLE TO SAFELY CONTROL THE VEHICLE. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION IT APPEARS THAT THIS HAS BEEN A COMMON PROBLEM WITH SACHS CLUTCHES FROM VOLKSWAGEN. CLEARLY, WITHOUT A RECALL, THIS IS PUTS MANY DRIVERS IN AN EXTREMELY UNSAFE SITUATION. THE DEALER REPAIRED THIS PROBLEM FOR NO COST; HOWEVER, THEY WERE UNAWARE THAT THIS PROBLEM IS COMMON AND THAT VW HAS RECENTLY RELEASED A SERVICE BULLETIN REGARDING THE FAILING CLUTCHES. A RECALL IS THE ANSWER; HOWEVER, VW SO FAR HAS NOT HAD TO ISSUE ONE. *TR

Voklswagen and Audi Oil Consumption Problem

Several Volkswagen and Audi vehicles have shown problems with excessive oil consumption. The excessive oil consumption requires the owner to regularly check the vehicle and can cause engine failure if the oil is not constantly replenished. Vehciles are consuming 1 quart for each 1,000 to 1,500 miles. Unfortunately, many Volkswagen dealers are not disclosing the problem.

Details: SINCE I BOUGHT MY AUDI, I HAVE HAD TO PUT OIL IN IT MANY TIMES, AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS IS NORMAL FOR A TURBO. I THINK THAT IS CRAZY, AND EVEN AN AUDI SERVICE MAN TOLD ME NOT ALL OF THE TURBOS DO THAT. Details: AFTER LEASING THE CAR 2 MONTHS LATER I HAD TO ADD OIL TO IT. THE ENGINE BURNS OIL LIKE CRAZY. 1 QUART OF OIL PER MONTH TO MONTH AND A HALF. THE ENGINE OIL WARNING LIGHT HAS COME SEVERAL TIMES CAUSING ME TO PULL OFF THE ROAD INTO THE CLOSEST GAS STATION TO BUY SOME OIL. DEPENDING OF WHEN IT HAPPENS, THIS HAS BEEN SOMEWHAT STRESSFUL. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS IS NORMAL. I DO NOT THINK SO. IF THEY HAD TOLD ME THIS, I WOULD NOT HAVE LEASED THIS CAR! *TR
