Kia Sedona Power Sliding Door Defect

Woman with broken car

Kia Sedona owners have complained about problems with the sliding doors.  Owners may be entitled to compensation or other relief.

More than 106,400 model year 2015-2018 Kia Sedona minivans have power sliding doors that could automatically close on objects located between the sliding doors and the minivans.  The power sliding door module controls the sensor that is located in the interior door well and detects movement while the sliding door closes.

Kia and the supplier determined the original programming of the module is set to a threshold level that can fail to detect objects in the path of the door sliding closed. This will prevent the automatic stop and reversal feature from doing its job.

In September 2017, Kia was looking at field data and found 17 customer complaints about power sliding doors that didn’t detect obstructions in 2015-2017 Sedona.  Engineers inspected the minivans and found the doors worked as intended, so Kia decided to monitor the field for additional problems.

Chevrolet Malibu Engine

cropped-woman-with-auto.jpg

Chevrolet Malibu owners have experienced significant engine problems.   2016 and 2017 Chevy Malibu owners have experienced engine problem.  One issues is that the the  Malibu will go into Reduced Engine Power mode.  Here is one typical complaint,

“The first time the car had less than 1k miles on it!! It feels like a transmission problem. I am familiar with the system where the car will turn itself off while at a stoplight and then back on again- I’m fine with that system. What is not okay is when driving in DC rush hour traffic, accelerating, braking, or slowing down and the car will violently jerk. The first time it felt as if I was rear-ended.”  2016 Chevrolet Malibu – Consumer Review, Edmunds.

Owners of these defective vehicles may be entitled to compensation for loss of use, diminished value, or other claims.  We offer a free consultation as part of our continuing investigation into defects in these cars.  Please call the Law Office of Howard Gutman, 973-598-1980.

Automobile Extended Warranty Information Sources

While many consumers purchase warranty plans for piece of mind, they may find companies refusing to provide coverage.

1. Parties to Sue

Generally claims should be filed against both the dealer and the warranty company.  Otherwise, the dealer says the warranty company failed to provide coverage and the warranty company argues the problem existed when the car was sold invalidating the coverage.

2. Defenses

Warranty companies aggressively try to avoid coverage despite the needs of the consumer, many of whom desperately need their car.  Here are some typical defenses and the response.

  • pre-existing condition-    Why didn’t the company inspect the car in the same way an insurance company asks for a medical examination before providing coverage.
  • hidden disclaimers           check the company’s literature and see if the promises conflict with disclaimers.  If so, that may be false advertising.
  • lack of maintenance         coverage should accord with the reasonable expectations of the insured and minor gaps should not bar coverage.
  • bogus report                     Frequently the warranty sends out an inspector whose job it is to avoid coverage.

SUMMARY:

CRUZE HAS COOLANT ODOR OUTSIDE CAR AND HAS LOSS OF COOLANT AT EVERY OIL CHANGE. DEALER DOES NOT WRITE THIS DOWN ON SERVICE RECORDS. THIS IS SIMILAR PROBLEM AS 2012 CRUZE ECO I HAD TO TRADE IN BECAUSE GM/DEALER COULD NOT FIX THE PROBLEM OF ANTIFREEZE LOSS. UNDER SOME CONDITIONS COOLANT TEMPERATURE GETS UP TO 236 DEG F BEFORE RADIATOR FAN COMES ON AND THIS GETS WORSE IN WINTER. THIS HIGH TEMPERATURE SEEMS TO ALIGN WITH PROBLEM BUT THE ANALOG GAUGE STOPS AT ABOUT 3/8 AND WILL NOT GO FURTHER EVEN WHEN DIGITAL TEMPERATURE REGISTERS 190DEG F OR 240 DEG F. ( THEY SAID GAUGE IS DESIGNED THIS WAY) GM AND DEALER SAY SYSTEM IS WORKING AS DESIGNED BUT HAVEN’T EXPLAINED FAN OPERATION OR WHY TEMPERATURE GETS TO 236 DEG F WHEN NORMAL TEMPERATURE IS 221 DEG F. THEY CANNOT EXPLAIN ODOR OR LOSS OF COOLANT. THIS COULD BE PROBLEM IN ANY CHEVY CRUZE ECO AND IF DRIVER DOES NOT WATCH COOLANT LEVEL THE CAR COULD OVERHEAT.

SUMMARY:

FUEL SYSTEM FAILURE RESULTING IN CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FIRE. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE BRAND NEW IN APRIL 2014. AFTER COMPLAINING ABOUT ENGINE POWER LOSS THREE MONTHS PRIOR, I STARTED SMELLING A FUEL ODOR THE WEEK BEFORE THANKSGIVING, I IMMEDIATELY NOTIFIED THE CHEVROLET DEALER ABOUT THE ODOR, THE DEALER DID INFORM ME THAT A TSB WAS ON GM DEALER WORLD IN REGARDS TO THE FUEL RAILS POSSIBLY COMING LOOSE CAUSING A FUEL ODOR / HESITATION. AFTER CAREFUL EXAMINATION OF THE VEHICLE THERE WAS NO VISIBLE FUEL LIQUID PRESENT ON THE ENGINE OR GROUND BELOW THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE SAT PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY FOR MAJORITY OF THE DAY, UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE TO TRANSPORT TO THE DEALER THREE MINUTES AFTER THE VEHICLE BURST INTO FLAMES IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, USING A GARDEN HOSE WHILE CALLING 911 THE VEHICLE BECAME FULLY INVOLVED IN THE ENGINE BAY SPREADING INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. ONCE WATER CONTACTED THE ENGINE BAY THE FIRE FURTHER SPREAD INDICATING THE FIRE WAS CHEMICALLY BASED. THE LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE VEHICLE USING A FOAM WATER MIXTURE. THE VEHICLE WAS DECLARED A TOTAL LOSS BY INSURANCE, I CONTACTED GM CUSTOMER SUPPORT ONLY TO BE STONEWALLED BY THE AGENT. I HAD OVER 10000 DOLLARS IN PAYMENTS INVESTED IN THIS VEHICLE. GM SHOULD HAVE STEPPED UP TO THE PLATE NOT THE INSURANCE. NOT A SURPRISE AFTER THE IGNITION SWITCH DISCRETIONS AND DEATHS. GOOGLE CHEVY CRUZE ENGINE FIRES THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE!!!!!!!!!!

I’M STILL GETTING COOLANT VAPORS INTO THE CAR. DEX-COOL HAS A SAFETY WARNING ABOUT BREATHING ANTIFREEZE VAPORS. INHALATION: AVOID BREATHING VAPORS OR MISTS. HIGHER TEMPERATURES MAY GENERATE VAPOR LEVELS SUFFICIENT TO CAUSE ADVERSE EFFECTS.
